After twenty years in the ordained ministry of the Church of Ireland, Alan Abernethy took a short sabbatical in order to put down on paper his reflections on his experience. He has long seen his life as a personal pilgrimage of faith and has struggled with his developing vocation to ministry. He says of this book, ‘These are intensely personal reflections but my hope and prayer is that sonme of the principles and points of reference I have found helpful may help others wrestle with personal faith and vocation to the ordained ministry. They may also help those who sit in the pew or who exercise a different ministry within the church to support and encourage their leaders in new ways.’
In trying to cover the main areas of Christian ministry in parish life, he includes discussions on worship, preaching, leadership, clergy training, managing change and spiritual disciplines.
