Leadership, dynamism, and enthusiasm are the values that we most need in the church today. There is a lack of a practical tools for taking the first steps in generating this energy. The Training Course for Leaders (TCL) was designed for this purpose. A participant had this to say about a recent course: ‘I found it a well-balanced course – serious but with lots of fun, which made for a very enjoyable weekend.’The TCL revolves around five main themes: Group Dynamics, The Dignity of the Human Person, Jesus Christ, Church as Community, Techniques of Time Management. The course uses a methodology of creating learning situations where participants learn by doing. The strategy is to train people who can give the course themselves in their own communities or schools. A special method for training facilitators is used. The course can be used by youth directors, catechists, religion teachers, parish workers, confirmation teams and others. The TCL is very flexible and can be a powerful tool for motivating both beginners and committed leaders. It can also be used as a tool for revitalising and even building different pastoral ministries and organisations. It can be a first step to productive networking. It can be given in a variety of ways: as a weekend experience or broken up into smaller units and used as a resource kit for religion class, for meetings, for short formation courses, for transition year in school. The TCL has already been published in Portuguese and Spanish and is widely used in Brazil, Latin America and in the USA. The present English version has been adapted for the European setting.
